Backup handheld data using the Application Loader

To backup handheld data to user computers, the Handheld Manager or Desktop Manager must be

installed on user computers. The Application Loader requires a physical connection to the handheld. You

can verify that the Application Loader is installed in the shared software directory on the administration

computer on which Handheld Software is installed.

1. Connect a handheld to an administration computer with a connection to the network.

2. At the command prompt, type \\

\Research In

Motion\Apploader\loader.exe. If the Application Loader starts, the tool is shared successfully.

3. Use your preferred distribution method (for example, a link in an email or a link on a web site) to

send users the following UNC path to the location of the Application Loader tool: \\

<shared

computer name>

\Research In Motion\Apploader\loader.exe.

When users click the link, the Application Loader starts and permits you to install Handheld Software on

the handheld, and then prompts you to allow a backup of the handheld to be performed. When users

accept the backup to be performed, the Application Loader produces a LoaderBackup-<

yyyy-mm-dd

>.ipd

file, which contains all handheld data. This file is saved locally on the user’s computer.
