Upgrade handhelds using the Application Loader
To upgrade handhelds that are connected to user computers, the Handheld Manager or Desktop
Manager must be installed on the computers. See
“BlackBerry Desktop Software” on page 10 for more
information.
The Application Loader requires a physical connection to the handheld.
! Use your preferred distribution method (for example, a link in an email or a link on a web site) to
send users the following UNC path to the location of the Application Loader: \\
<shared computer
name>
\Research In Motion\Apploader\loader.exe.
When users click the link, the Application Loader starts and looks in the shared software directory for
software upgrades to install. The Application Loader caches the Handheld Software upgrade on each
user computer in case network interruptions occur during the upgrade.
Forcing upgrades to handhelds using the Desktop
Manager
To upgrade Handheld Software using the Desktop Manager, user computers must have the handheld
software upgrade installed. Distribute the Handheld Software installation package to user computers
using your preferred distribution method.
You can force users to upgrade their Handheld Software by defining forced handheld upgrading IT
policies. These IT policies define the number of times that users can restart the
Desktop Manager before
they are forced to run the Application Loader and upgrade their handheld applications.
Set forced upgrade IT policies
1. In the BlackBerry Manager, on the Global tab, click Edit Properties.
2. Click IT Policy.
3. In the IT Policy Administration section, double-click IT Policies.
Note: If you select a handheld that is assigned to a user who does not have a software configuration defined, you are
prompted to select a software configuration to use, but the software configuration is not assigned to the user. See
“Assign a software configuration to a user” on page 18 for more information.
Tip: To interact with the Handheld Software loading process, click Load Handheld-Interactive.
Note: Users are prompted to perform a backup of their handhelds when the installation completes. See “Appendix C:
Wireless backup and restore” on page 45 for more information.
